I agree that the engravings themselves probably do not add value unless exceptionally done and unusual, but for me the old watches are all about their history and the engraving keeps alive something that was one important to another, so make it extra special to me than just a plain watch.
I think the value that is added by engravings is more sentimental than monetary.
